Have y’all ever thought about the things you’re pets do while you’re away and they are alone? Have you ever wondered if we get bored, scared, lonely, or into mischief? Even if you’re pet has free run of the place, you probably assume they’re just resting and nappin’ right?
It’s not to far a leap to know all pets are curious, rambunctious, playful, and can have a mischievous mind. So what are they really up to while you are gone?
Maybe, I can ease your mind just a bit. I’m one of 7 furbabies here and when my Lady leaves, we’re left to fend for ourselves in here. Each of us react a bit different, but I can give ya the inside scoop on a few of the happenin’s. WOOF!
Here are 10 Things You’re Pets Do While You’re Away:
#1. Your Pet Will Look for You
Your pet will not understand why you’ve left, or where you’ve gone. So, your pet will search for you. Your furry friend will roam from room to room tryin’ to find you. Your pet doesn’t know where you are, when, or if you are comin’ back! Animals don’t have a concept of time, so whether you’re gone for ten minutes or hours at a time you pet will continue to search for you. My Lady can step outside for a minute and we go a little crazy yippin’ and yappin’ when she comes back in! You’d think she had been gone for days!
#2. Pets Get Bored
Boredom doesn’t just affect you humanz. Us pets can become under-stimulated and downright bored when alone. Some of us sleep when we’re bored, but that brother and sister of mine can get a little on the destructive side! I try to tell em they gonna be in trouble, but that don’t stop em none. For some reason they always go for the trash can and the toilet paper. You ever had you’re house rolled in toilet? Come home to trash everywhere? Yep! They have a grand ole time with it, but my Lady doesn’t seem the least bit amused with it. They’re just youngin’s, maybe they’ll learn to behave someday.
#3. Pets May Get Stressed
Stress and anxiety in pets can come from several causes and bein’ alone is one of them. I have one sister that goes a little bonkers when she sees my Lady is gonna leave. She sure don’t like it when my Lady leaves the house without her! Pets will have different ways of copin’ with bein’ stressed out. Stress can cause your pet to lose interest in food, groomin’ themselves, playfulness, and so much more. Trainin’ your furry friend how to handle stress can help em stay calm while you are away, and in other stressful situations. My Lady leaves that television thing goin’ at our house. We’re use to hearin’ it and so it helps us to settle in and feel a sense of normal.
#4. Pets Clean and Groom Themselves
While all pets are not the perfect example of cleanliness, animals have a natural instinct to groom themselves. Some pets can spend up to half of their day groomin’ themselves. Them cat friends of mine probably do plus some WOOF! While you’re away, we use part of our alone time to get ourselves spiffied up!
#5. Pets Play
No matter what type of pet ya have, most of em like to play in their own way. Playin’ is a way for your pet to cope with boredom, a form of exercise, or because it’s just a fun thing to do. Havin’ a variety of different toys will keep your pet engaged while you are away. Exception!!! If you’re pet has a tendency to eat their toys like my brother does, it’s not a good idea to leave them out while you’re away and they are unsupervised!
#6. Pets Will Explore
Exploratory behavior is natural to all animals, even us furbabies. Your pet will explore to figure out their immediate surroundin’s. We like to know where the food and water supply is, along with the sleepin’ quarters and bathroom. Oh, and if ya got a part of your home your pets normally aren’t allowed in, ya can bet your pets are gonna go explorin’ in it! Same goes for the furniture if your pet isn’t normally allowed there, like the bed or couch, ya can bet they are gonna sneak a nice snooze right up in the middle of it!
#7. Pets May Have Accidents
“When you gotta go, you gotta go.” Peein’ and poopin’ is just part of life. It’s true for you humanz and it’s the same for us pets. If your pet has to “go” and you’re away, a house trained pet will try to wait. We’ll hold it ’til our eyeballs are a floatin’, but in the end accidents may happen.
#8. Pets Catch Up On Rest
Animals need sleep to stay alert while they are awake. Your pet may sleep up to a third of their life. Some pets will be more active durin’ the day and some are more active durin’ the night, but your pet will sleep while you’re away. It’s my favorite way to pass the time when my Lady is away. Oh what am I sayin’? I like naps even when she’s home WOOF!
#9. Pets Get Hungry
Although, your pet won’t break out the pots and pans and cook itself a full course meal while your away, your pet will require food and water. Make sure ya leave enough food and water out for em for the time you’re gonna be gone. Most times my Lady only leaves water for her short trips ’cause we have set feedin’ times.
#10. The Waiting Game
Your furry pal has definitely been busy while you’ve been gone, but they also miss you. They will keep checkin’ and lookin’ for ya. If they hear a noise, they will excitedly investigate the sound in hopes that it’s you comin’ home. Your pet is tired of waitin’, come home already! WOOF!
