My dog was there to comfort and protect me as a child through trying times! He made me want to rescue animals when I grew up!

When my dog was about 12 weeks old, she laid down next to me for the first time. I will always remember that, because when we got her at 9 weeks she would hide underneath a bench because I think that she was scared of us.

My baby Winnie was with me from the time she was 6 weeks, until she passed at age 16. She and I bonded, we were very close, she was there with me through 2 divorces, and boyfriends, and health issues. She was the light of my life.

There was a dog who would run loose in our neighborhood when I was in gradeschool. We found out the owners were gone all day and the dog got out and ran free until the owner came home at night. The owners tried to ship the dog to several different family members all over the country but the dog would still run away during the day no matter where he was placed. Finally the family was going to have to ship the dog to a family member in France. They had to go to the state capital to get papers for the dog to fly overseas. They asked our family if we would watch the dog while they went to get the papers. My father had always said NO pets. My sisters and I, along with my mom, convinced my dad to keep the dog at least while the owners went to get the papers. Finally my dad broke down and said, I can't see this dog flying to a whole new country, when so many people here love him already. He called the owners and told them we would keep the dog, for good. That dog lived with us until I graduated from college, and was a full-bred liver colored Springer Spaniel. He passed away at the age of 13. He bonded with my dad so much, and my mom said, the dog knew who he had to win over, in order to live with us. :)

My Heidi is a rescue dog who loves to be loved. As soon as she came home, I gave her a bath and explained to her that this was her forever home. She fell asleep in my arms and to this day, when she's sick or afraid she comes to me and knows that I'll help her!
