Dog Lovin' Homemade Dog Treats Recipe
Recipe type: Dog Treats
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup olive oil (or a combination of bacon grease and oil)
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup applesauce
  • 4 pieces of bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ½ cup flaxseed meal
  • 3 cups rye flour (may substitute whole wheat)
  1. Heat oven to 350
  2. In stand mixer or by hand, combine egg, oil, peanut butter, applesauce, bacon, and water. Mix until well combined.
  3. Add flaxseed meal and 2 cups of flour, stirring well.
  4. Add the remaining cup of flour slowly. It will be hard to mix, and you may need to put the dough on a floured surface and knead the remaining flour in.
  5. Dough should be heavy and slightly sticky. If necessary, add more flour or water until it’s easy to work with.
  6. Roll out on floured surface to desired thickness…between ¼-inch and ⅓-inch, depending on the size and age of your dog.
  7. Cut into shapes and place close together on ungreased cookie sheet.
  8. Bake at 350 F for 30 minutes, then turn the heat down to 200 F and bake for an additional hour. Remove from oven and let the biscuits sit on the baking sheet until cool. For very hard biscuits, leave them in the oven as it cools down.
  9. Watch the tails wag!
