Homemade Gingerbread Dog Ornaments
Recipe type: Holiday
  • ½ cup baking soda
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • ⅓ cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tsp. ginger
  • ribbon
  • paint pen
  • straw
  • optional- brown food coloring
  1. Preheat oven to 175°
  2. Whisk together baking soda, cornstarch, cinnamon, and ginger together well.
  3. Combine dry ingredients in a large saucepan with water, bring to a boil, stirring constantly until mixture is smooth and pudding like in consistency.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in brown coloring if desired-the spices will add a bit of color but it is still pretty light, I wanted mine to not only smell like gingerbread but resemble it in color as well so I added a good amount of coloring.
  5. Pour dough out onto waxed or parchment paper, wrap lightly to keep moist and allow to cool just until it is comfortable to touch, knead dough, adding cornstarch until it feels like a silky playdough.
  6. Roll dough to ¼” thickness.
  7. Cut out shapes using a dog bone cookie cutter (or a dog house, fire hydrant,etc..)
  8. Use a straw to poke holes for ribbon, on the ends if you want to hang vertically or 2 in the center for a bow.
  9. Place cookies on cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes, flip, and bake and additional 20 minutes.
  10. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
  11. Add string or ribbon to hang your ornament on.
  12. Write your pets name and the year using a paint pen-dry before hanging.
**Note how you can do the holes different depending on which way you want them to hang.
