I have told y’all before about my little, (or not so little), sister Brandi and her “early incontinence” condition. I also told ya that most people are aware that it can be a problem with senior pets, but it can happen to young dogs too. There are various reasons why young dogs can have early incontinence such as early spayin’, illness, injury, deformity, behavioral issues, etc. Depending on the cause, there are different ways of helpin’ em. Brandi was put on medication over a year ago, for hers and it has helped her. You would never know she has incontinence problems. However, her medication has a nasty side affect – namely, Dry Mouth! That is where Oratene® Brushless Oral Care products come in.
You may be thinkin’ “how do ya know your pet has dry mouth”, right? How does it affect their dental health? Or, better yet, what do you do about it? Well, my Lady got Brandi some Oratene Brushless Oral Care Toothpaste Gel. Lemme me fetch her to tell ya what it is, how it works, and how it can benefit your pet!
Here’s my Lady to tell ya ’bout Oratene Brushless Oral Care
February is Pet Dental Health Month, so it is a good time to talk about Brandi’s Dry Mouth condition and the effect it can have on her dental health. Dry Mouth is an actual change in the quality of saliva and it is the same for pets as it is in humans. Most of us know that certain medications can cause Dry Mouth. Dry Mouth is often caused by common meds such as those for behavior, pain, incontinence, allergies, etc.
When Brandi was started on her incontinence medication, she started drinking more water. It was alarming at first and I questioned the vet about the water drinking because it seemed counterproductive to stopping her dribbling. My vet explained that the medication could cause Dry Mouth and that was why she was drinking more water. While I knew humans can have Dry Mouth from medications, I had not thought about it in connection with my pets! It was eye opening! The big question is how do you know if your pet has Dry Mouth?
Recognizing Dry Mouth is Important to Dental Health
Recognizing Dry Mouth is extremely important to our pets’ dental health! Aging pets and pets on medications, like Brandi, can be affected. A pet with chronic Dry Mouth will develop severe halitosis and accumulate plaque which can lead to tartar and tooth decay. In addition, dental disease can affect their overall health! Dental health rates right up there with nutrition in giving our pets a long healthy life! Knowing this, makes it very important to recognize the signs of Dry Mouth so we can provide them with a different oral care regimen that can balance the oral flora. Pets can still have saliva and drool, but watch for these other indications –
Indications of Dry Mouth in Pets Can Include:
- Tacky, thick saliva
- Granulated tissue
- Halitosis
- Food aversions
- Dry cracked tongue
- Plaque and calculus
- Ulcerations or lesions in the mouth
- Inflamed bleeding gums
- Receding gums

How Do You Relieve Your Pets’ Dry Mouth?
We have recently started using Oratene Brushless Oral Care Toothpaste Gel to help alleviate Brandi’s Dry Mouth! Oratene’s enzymes are unique in that they are brushless, kill odor-causing bacteria, and removes plaque biofilm. They are great for overall dental health for all pets. Additionally, Oratene Oral Care products are especially beneficial for senior pets, pets with special health conditions such as diabetes and those pets on medications for behavior, allergies, heart problems, thyroid dysfunction, urinary incontinence – which are also known to reduce the quality of saliva in people as well.
Oratene’s enzyme systems are based on 35 years of enzyme research and developed to manage Dry Mouth and work to replenish the protection and defense mechanism that is naturally found in healthy saliva. Oratene Oral Care Products include Brushless Toothpaste Gel, Water Additive, and Breath Freshener. All three of the products have the LP3 (to kill bacteria and germs) and the MD2 (to remove plaque biofilm) enzymes.
Xylitol, Chlorhexidine, alcohol, and detergent FREE!
Brandi is a laid-back girl that will allow you to open her mouth, look around, dig around, and set up camp if you want too! Knowing this, I chose to use the Oratene Brushless Oral Care Toothpaste Gel. I felt the toothpaste gel would give her direct optimum benefit. Oratene Brushless Toothpaste Gel features two patented enzyme systems: the LP3 Enzyme System AND the MD2 Enzyme System (Mutanase + Dextranase). The clear gel form provides long lasting protection to the teeth and gums, inhibits odor-causing bacteria, and removes plaque biofilm. It does this by making the plaque water soluble and unable to adhere to tooth. It DOES NOT contain Xylitol, alcohol, tooth-staining Chlorhexidine or Chlorine compounds.
To use, apply about a 1/2″ strip directly to the upper and lower gums once or twice daily. While you can use a brush, I prefer to use my finger. Brandi will accept my finger a lot easier than a brush and it makes it easy to apply.
I use the Oratene Toothpaste Gel twice a day. I apply it to her gums in the mornings after she has had her breakfast and morning run or hole digging, if the dirt on her nose is a clue to her morning activities!
After her nightly meal, and before bedtime, she likes to lay at my feet while I work. It’s the perfect time to apply a second application! She usually doesn’t even bother to get up!
The Oratene Toothpaste Gel is safe for both cats and dogs and they love the flavor! It’s great for cats that don’t drink a lot of water to aid in their dental health!
Oratene Brushless Oral Care Water Additive
In addition to the Oratene Toothpaste Gel, we have also been using the Oratene Water Additive. The Oratene Water Additive is especially great for multi-pet households like mine, and especially my senior girl, to kill germs and remove plaque. The Water Additive is a concentrated, flavorless additive that you simply add to their daily drinking water. Simply add 2 pumps per quart of water. That’s it!
The Water Additive is a safe, healthy way to conveniently clean pet’s teeth, freshen breath, kill germs and remove plaque without brushing. With its tasteless formula, Oratene Water Additive is an easy way to provide Oratene’s benefits of oral protection against bad breath, plaque, and periodontal disease! For complete protection, use together with the Oratene Toothpaste Gel.

Oratene Brushless Toothpaste Gel fixed my Dry Mouth right up! Now, I wonder if I can get some braces for my crooked bottom teeth? WOOF!
Brandi and I are happy with the Oratene Toothpaste Gel! I She doesn’t seem as bothered by Dry Mouth now and her water drinking has slowed down to a normal rate! Thankfully, we caught her Dry Mouth symptoms early enough that we avoided the more serious consequences! We are happy the Oratene Brushless Oral Care Toothpaste Gel has helped with her irritating Dry Mouth that could cause future dental and gum disease! Protecting her pearly whites plays a big role in giving her a long healthy life!

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Oratene. The opinions and text are all mine.
We give them dog biscuit that claim they help with bad breath, but the biscuits do not seem to help.
I love the water addictive, I think that is a perfect way to clean your pets teeth and breath without the fuss of putting your fingers in his mouth which he may not approve.
We have used water additives and dental chews. We also have their teeth cleaned.
I have three rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds and none of them like getting their teeth brushed. They are all in the 6-8 year old range and I’m planning on getting them all dentals in the next month or so. I’d love to find a product that would also help keep their teeth clean AFTER the dentals. I have tried a couple of different products plus they get dental chews, but it’s not always enough .
I brush my dog’s teeth when I remember. I need to take better care of their teeth.
would love to try this on my dogs
I like the water additive most. I think it’ll be easier!
Looks like it’s easy enough to use and sounds like a good idea.
I use dental chews they use once daily after dinner. I was told to also brush the teeth but they really don’t tolerate that.
I am not sure if my dog has dry mouth. I will have to talk to my vet.
Sounds like a great product. I like that you don’t have to actually try to brush your pat’s teeth.
Pets I mean 🙂
This is awesome! It is such a struggle to find good hygiene products for our pets!
I give my dog dental chews.
We use dental chews for our dog.
That’s pretty cool, this’d be a great product to have around .
I have tried to brush my dogs teeth but she wouldn’t let me. I would like to try this.
Dental chews and water additives and yearly pet dental exams including teeth cleaning when needed.
Great! I’ll be sure and get this next time my dog needs medication!
I brush my dogs teeth.
I brush my dogs’ teeth several times a week – they are very good about it! I would like to switch to daily brushing plus a water additive.
This might come in handy with our new puppy.
A water additive sounds good
I occasional brush his teeth and give him marrow bones. Vet says Wally has very clean healthy teeth & gums…
I give my dog dental chews once in a while.
Its Xylitol free? Woo hoo. I’m going to check it out. I don’t understand why so many dog toothpastes persist in using it when it poisonous to dogs. Ugh.
My dog gets her teeth brushed every night. She’s actually really good about it and lets me get the back teeth and inside . I do have trouble getting the bottom teeth though since her lip gets in the way (and shes trying to eat the toothpaste).
It looks like a great product for them…
I would use this to starting brush my cats teeth.
With treats and a brush!
Toothbrushing from an early age, dental care treats and lots of fresh water.
I learned that this is for cats too! Quite interesting, as I’ve heard of brushless gels before, but are they as effective as brushing?
I’ve been using the Oratene Toothpaste Gel for my dog the last couple years ever since he had teeth extracted. It’s a great product!
Dry mouth is certainly never something I thought about in connection to pets but it makes sense that they would also experience it with medications.
I use something I believe is called Plaque Off. Not sure if it helps or not. I give it to my 14.5 year old Corgi whonhas halotosis!
Sounds like some good stuff
We brush on occasion but since Diesel does not like that so much we rely mostly on his dental chews. Which he actually likes a lot so that’s great. This is a really neat product and we are excited to try it(well, I am anyways!).
I give them dental chews.
My kitties are always throwing up so I’d be surprised it they didn’t have dry mouth
We use dental chews!
I use a gel although I don’t apply it as often as I probably should. I also get my dog’s teeth cleaned at the vet once a year.
I take my dog babies to the vet to get their teeth professionally cleaned. I cannot do it well enough on my own.
I don’t have a dog baby anymore, but I love cleaning a dog’s mouth and helping both the dog and me (so I don’t have to smell bad breath!)
i use dental chews and a all natural toothpaste but the chews dont seem to do a whole lot
Such a great idea, thanks for sharing.
I never associated the bad breath with dry mouth. I am glad there is such medication to relieve both symptoms.
My dog hates when I try to brush his teeth so he tries to bite me which is why I give him dental chews!
I brush my dogs teeth a few times a week.
I use dental chews for their dental health.
I was @ someones house recently and her dog’s bad breath was so bad you could smell it when she walked by.
We primarily use dental chews
I just get my dog’s teeth professionally cleaned when he needs it. He doesn’t like brushing lol
Brush and dental chews for my dogs
My senior rescue dog Monty has the worst problems with his mouth. Thousands of dollars spent (literally) on his teeth and they still cause him problems and his mouth is dry and his breath is pretty bad. So far all I have given him is chews besides the stuff that he had right after his mouth surgery.
We brush our dog’s teeth every Sunday and then give them a dental chew.
We brush them and also have dental scaling tools – –
We do brush our dogs teeth, give them dog chews, but never added a additive to their water.
We use Dental Chews
Would love to try this on my dog stewie
I have bought dental chews and just recently bought him a toothbrush and peanut butter toothpaste. Haven’t tried it yet but I will.
I think this is one product and method my dog actually wouldn’t mind.
I give her dental chews
My sister has used this on her dogs and recommended it for our dogs also
We give our dogs dental chews. This looks like a great product to try!
We use denta chews for our larger dogs, but for the small one we brush her teeth regularly with a doggie toothbrush.
This is something I was not aware of.
My dog loves getting his teeth and gums brushed.
I highly recommend this product. Highly recommend. I know a friend who recently had her dog at the vet and they offered her dental checkup and cleaning, etc. The quoted price was very high.
I bought this for my girl a while ago and it has really helped.
