All of y’all are gonna call my Lady crazy! She just went and fed those six stray dogs that have been hangin’ round here for quite a while! They are so skinny it ain’t even real!! Now, before you say it, I know – I mean look at me! I was a stray dog at the ripe age of 6 months old and now I’m a livin’ in the lap of pure doggie luxury round here!!!
My Lady says she just can’t stand the thought of them being out there starvin’ to death! I guess I need to explain that we live out in the country. It’s really not that far out of city limits, but we have a real problem with stray dogs! She has tried to find ’em some help, but apparently there isn’t any help for stray dogs or cats out in the country or rural areas of the county. She has called all kinds of folks, including the humane shelter, the sheriff’s office and even the County Judge. They all say there is not a thing they can do about it!
In the pack of stray dogs hangin’ round here, there is a German Shepherd male and a female Lab looking mamma dog. The others all look just like black Lab mix. Well, with a male and a mamma, you know what’s fixin’ to happen! We’re gonna have more puppies than we know what to do with round here!
All of ’em sure stick together! And, they must not like a pettin’ like I do, ’cause you can’t even get close to ’em, or at least human folk haven’t been able to. But, finally today, my Lady managed to pet the German Shepherd! I would say that was progress, but round here they do call her the “dog whisperer”. If she ain’t careful, that title is gonna become the “crazy dog lady” he he.
The stray dogs are friendly enough with us furbabies, but we aren’t allowed to play with ’em. So, are we like snobby dogs or somethin’ here? All I know is, my Lady says they have fleas and ticks and she thinks the German Shepherd has an eye infection 🙁 She don’t want us gettin’ or catchin’ nothin’ from ’em.
Anyway, I think My Lady is on a mission to help ’em in some kind of way. She says with the four of us, she can’t take in anymore cause of the expense. But, then she turns around and starts feedin’ ’em! It’s gonna get purty interestin’ round here for sure!
Who is responsible for stray dogs in rural areas? Do you know or have an answer?
Who is responsible in rural areas for stray dogs and cats? There has got to be somethin’ someone can do? All we know is we gotta find ’em some help! I mean after all, them poor babies deserve a good home too! So, if y’all have any ideas, I sure would appreciate y’all lettin’ us in on it!
This breaks my heart! I wish I could adopt EVERY single dog I see, but I think my husband would just freak out if I randomly started bringing strays home…but who cares what he says? lol. I love your writing style, it’s so adorable!!!
I understand what you mean. I saw 2 cats in my back yard, so I started feeding them. After awhile 2 cats became 5. I wasn’t going to let this continue, so I did some research. I called around at the different animal sheltars in my area and found out that there was a wonderful program for stray cats. It’s called Trap/Neuter/Release. I borrowed a trap from the shelter for free and began trapping cats. When I would get a cat or young kitty(3-6 months) , I would take them to the shelter and get them spayed/neutered, shots, and microchipped for free. I then pick them up the next day and set them free. They still come to eat everyday. I just don’t have to worry about more litters being born. I took responsiblity for someone else’s cats. I have 2 more to go. I trapped 5 so far . You should do some research to find out if they do those kind of programs in your area. It’s the best thing you can do for them besides continue to feed them. Take the matter into your own hands. Check out a T N R Program.
If you will contact me with your state I will try to use contacts in the rescue groups I work with. One is part of a nationwide network. I only work with no kill rescues. In the meantime, contact all the vets in your area. Vets are probably one of rescue’s greatest expenses so they usually know how to contact them. Also, your state probably has a spay/neuter society and they may be able to put you in contact with someone who can help. I’m in rural Mississippi so,,,,,,,,,yeah, we know about stray animals. preciousyipperbear uses gmail.
Thank you! I have sent you an email with some information.
