If your beloved pet requires medicine to stay healthy, you might be having trouble with administering the medication.
Dogs, cats, and other animals can’t understand how their medicine will help them and may be resistant to taking the medication that’s formulated to promote greater longevity.
If your pet seems resistant to taking its medicine, here are a few simple tricks that will make the process easier for both you and your pet.
Sneak the Medicine in With Food
Certain types of medication can be mixed in with food so that your pet will ingest it unknowingly while eating.
Pills and liquids can be snuck into pet food that’s preferably wet and strong-smelling to mask any unusual taste, smell, or texture that might deter your pet from taking the medicine.
Many pet medicines can also be mixed in with treats that you give your pet for good behavior.
You can also use pill pockets.
Keep Your Pet Calm
Your pet may be more willing to take the medication if you know effective ways to keep them calm before you try giving it to them.
Animals can often detect human emotions based on body language, so it’s important that you remain calm yourself when you’re trying to give the medication so that you don’t inadvertently frighten your pet.
For example, if you need to spray one of the dog pink eye products into your dog’s eye, you can keep your dog calmer by petting or massaging them prior to spraying.
Make a Game Out of It
If you play a game with your pet while administering the medication, they’ll probably be so distracted that they’ll ingest the medicine without realizing what they have taken.
You can drop or throw some treats and have your pet catch them by mouth and then have your pet catch the medicine instead of a treat at some point during the game.
Put the Medicine on a Front Paw
This trick often works well for administering a medication that comes in liquid or powder form.
You can place the medicine on one of your pet’s front paws so that your pet will want to lick it off naturally.
Cats are especially vehement about keeping their paws clean, so this trick may work well for your feline.
You are doing the right thing for your pet by making sure they take their medication.
But if you’re tired of struggling to get your pet to take their medicine, these tips can help create a more positive experience for you and your pet alike.
