As a pet owner, it can be difficult to watch your pet battle even the smallest of health issues. However, some health issues are minor and will resolve on their own in a day or two. For kitty sniffles, how do you know when it is time to take your cat to the vet?
Is Your Cat Eating and Drinking Normally?
If your cat is eating or drinking like it normally does, there is likely nothing to worry about at the moment.
Generally, cats will signal that they aren’t feeling well by not eating or by drinking more than normal.
You should also check to make sure that your pet is going to the bathroom normally.
Will Your Cat Play with You?
Generally speaking, a cat will chase or stalk most things that it sees moving.
If your cat seems indifferent to its favorite toys, it could be a sign of lethargy.
However, you should first make sure that your pet isn’t simply bored with the toy. Or, it may be avoiding a play session because it fears being attacked by another animal in the house.
Is Your Cat Hiding?
When a cat is sick in the wild, it will hide from predators because it feels vulnerable to attack.
If your cat is hiding in the closet, under a bed, or in other areas where it doesn’t usually spend time, it could indicate a serious health issue that needs to be resolved immediately.
To coax your cat out from its hiding place, offer a treat that is both warm and soft.
The extra warmth will make it easier for a sick cat to smell while offering a soft treat makes it easier for the cat to digest.
What Happens While at the Vet?
During pet consultations, a veterinarian will do a comprehensive exam on the animal to determine what its health issue may be.
This may involve taking X-rays, taking blood samples, or asking you questions about its recent behavior.
All of this information will help lead to an educated diagnosis.
Once a diagnosis has been made, your cat may be given medicine or scheduled for surgery.
In some cases, it may be recommended that the animal be given palliative care or be put down.
If you feel like your animal is in pain or discomfort, don’t hesitate to get it checked by a medical professional.
However, as long as it is eating, drinking, and playing normally, it is likely experiencing a minor issue that will go away on its own.
