5 Essentials When Camping with Your Dog

Taking your dog camping can be a great way to have a good time with your favorite pet. Going camping isn’t as simple as just bringing a tent, though, especially if you want to keep your dog safe. Below are five essentials you’ll need to bring with you when camping with your dog.

5 Essentials When Camping with Your Dog

A Good Leash

Even the best-behaved dog is going to be tempted to run off in the woods.

The unfamiliar setting combined with an abundance of wildlife is too much for most dogs to handle, so make sure that you have a good leash.

You’ll probably want something that’s particularly strong if you have a bigger dog, especially if you are concerned with the possibility of your dog breaking a leash when it gets too excited.

Extra Bedding

If your dog is going to sleep in your tent, you’ll want to ensure that you bring along enough bedding.

It’s often a good idea to invest in a custom tarp so that you can protect the floor of your tent from your dog’s paws and so that you can both sleep comfortably without having to worry about a wet floor.

A little extra bedding can really go a long way when you are camping with a dog.

Weather Protection

Just because your dog has a thick coat of fur doesn’t mean they don’t need protection from the elements.

Use paw protectors for your dog if you will be camping during extreme heat or freezing cold.

This will protect them from burns and frostbite.

Make sure you bring a coat or jacket for a dog with a thin coat and a cooling neck wrap for a dog with a thick coat.

Flea/Tick Protection

It’s no secret that the woods are crawling with bugs.

It’s especially important that you bring something along that will help you to protect your pet from fleas and ticks.

The usual flea or tick repellant is a good idea, but it’s never a bad idea to couple that with a flea collar.

While it might feel like overkill, it’s better than having to pick fleas off of your dog when you go home.

Cage/Crate

If you are taking your dog camping, you’re probably looking forward to letting your pet enjoy nature.

With that said, you’ll still want to ensure that you have a safe place for your pet if there is an emergency.

Bringing along a simple travel crate or cage is a great idea, especially if you encounter a situation in which you can’t watch your dog and take care of the issue at the same time.

Try to pack a few extras when you travel with your pet.

If you plan correctly, you’ll have a great time with your dog.

Though you might have to bring along a few extra items, you’ll still be able to enjoy nature with man’s best friend.
