Parasites can affect pets throughout the year, but the level and type of risk often change with the seasons. Temperature, humidity, wildlife activity, and time spent outdoors all influence exposure to fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and intestinal parasites.
Geography matters too, since a mild winter in one region may allow parasites to remain active while freezing conditions temporarily reduce activity elsewhere.
Knowing how seasonal conditions affect common parasites can help pet owners discuss appropriate prevention and testing with their veterinarians.

Spring Brings Increased Parasite Activity
Warmer temperatures and greater rainfall often create favorable conditions for parasites. Fleas become more active, while ticks begin appearing in yards, parks, wooded areas, and tall grass. Pets spending more time outside have more opportunities for exposure.
Mosquito activity also increases as temperatures rise. Because mosquitoes can transmit heartworm disease to dogs and cats, prevention becomes especially important. Heartworm disease can damage the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels, and infected pets may initially show few obvious symptoms.
Spring also increases exposure to intestinal parasites. Dogs may encounter contaminated soil or feces at dog parks and walking trails. Roundworms, hookworms, and other parasites can cause digestive problems, weight loss, or anemia, although some infected animals show no immediate signs.
Summer Creates Peak Exposure Opportunities
Summer frequently brings high parasite pressure because pets and their owners spend more time outdoors. Warm, humid conditions can support flea populations, while mosquitoes remain active in many areas.
Ticks are another concern. Depending on location and tick species, they may transmit illnesses such as Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. Owners should inspect pets after hikes, camping trips, or time in grassy and wooded environments. Pay particular attention around the ears, neck, toes, and other areas where ticks can remain difficult to spot.
Veterinary testing may be necessary if a pet develops unexplained symptoms after possible exposure. Diagnostic laboratories use specialized equipment, including microscopes and other scope instruments, to examine samples and help identify certain parasites or related abnormalities.
Fall Does Not Mean Parasite Season Is Over
Cooler weather can create the impression that parasite prevention is no longer necessary. In many regions, however, fleas and ticks remain active well into fall.
Fleas can also move indoors, where heated homes provide suitable conditions for continued development. Adult fleas represent only part of an infestation because eggs, larvae, and pupae may be present in carpets, furniture, pet bedding, and floor cracks.
Fall outdoor activities can increase tick exposure as families hike or spend time in wooded areas. Wildlife moving through residential properties may also introduce ticks and other parasites into yards.
Winter Risks Depend on Climate and Environment
Freezing weather can reduce some outdoor parasite activity, but winter does not eliminate every risk. Fleas may survive indoors, and certain tick species can remain active during warmer winter days.
Regional climate makes a major difference. Pets living in warmer parts of the United States may face mosquito, flea, and tick exposure for much of the year. Dogs traveling with their families can also encounter parasites that are uncommon in their home region.
Indoor pets are not completely protected either. Parasites can enter homes on other animals, clothing, or shoes, and mosquitoes occasionally find their way indoors.
Prevention Should Follow the Pet, Not Just the Calendar
Effective parasite control depends on a pet's species, age, health, location, travel patterns, and lifestyle. Veterinarians can recommend appropriate preventive medications and testing schedules based on those individual factors.
Owners should also watch for persistent scratching, hair loss, visible ticks, diarrhea, coughing, unexplained fatigue, pale gums, or changes in appetite. These symptoms can have many causes, so veterinary evaluation is important rather than assuming parasites are responsible.
Parasite risks rise and fall throughout the year, but they rarely disappear completely.
