Constant Companion: The Most Important Daily Tips for Your Pet

Dogs and cats can soon become as comfortable to you as one of the family. The big difference, however, is that a loved pet can also turn into a non-existent presence. Tired from a hard day at school or work can make the couch too cozy to ignore. Still thinking about that rude remark or bad grade, a slight nuzzle on your hand can quickly turn into an annoying interruption. Or a constant barking can even be worse. If you have ever felt this way, stop and think of what your pet may be trying to say.

A Pet’s Thinking Pattern

Pets have one thing on their mind while you are away from the house -you. They patiently wait for that car to pull into the driveway or listen for the turn of the knob on the back door. If you have a pet that has been waiting all day for your return, always acknowledge them through speech, or a welcoming touch. The joy and warmth they offer could easily rid you of that sour mood.

Companionship for the Elderly

Pets provide one-on-one companionship for elderly people. They can make the world a brighter and more welcoming place for widows and widowers. A calming purr and the feel of fur in the fingertips helps ease anxiety and lift depression symptoms. Even when an aging owner cannot provide adequate care, services like those offered at Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care provide peace of mind for patients and pets alike.

Grooming Feels So Good

Making it a habit to groom your pet daily provides not only a shiny coat, but also make you aware of any unusual markings or problems that they may have. Cats are pretty good at grooming themselves, but checking for fleas, ticks, sore eyes or a lack of normal purring can alert you that your cat needs attention soon. Dogs are not as good at grooming and a brush that finds an itch is like heaven to them. Check their ears, mouth and skin for any changes on a daily basis.

Food and Water

While a pet’s food bowl may have leftover morsels and water, change them daily. Domestic animals are not usually picky about food, especially if they are hungry, but a colony of ants or lady bugs could have been parading over their bowl and the smell can be disgusting to them. Fresh water is a must. Imagine drinking a flat warm soda that has been sitting out all night. Pets do not ask for much but having fresh food and water is something that most demand.

Imagine walking into your home and being ignored by the entire family. Whether a pet voices objection or not, remember that you are their whole life. They depend on you for food and water, shelter, grooming and washing, medical care and more than anything, love.
