As the family is gathered ’round the tree hangin’ their ornaments and decoratin’ for the season don’t leave us furry and loyal family members out! Get us an ornament of our very own! Ya can also make us one like these easy ones my Lady makes! My Lady calls these homemade Gingerbread Dog Ornaments adorable and says they are memory ornaments. We have homemade dog ornaments for each year on the Christmas tree. Ya can also use the date ya got adopted instead of each year, along with your name to make it personalized.
My Lady made us one with our name and the year on em. I think they look mighty fine, especially mixed in with our Silver Dog Biscuit Christmas Tree Ornaments. Somebody’s gonna start thinkin’ we got a house full of pups ’round here. WOOF!
Be sure and hang em high! Us dogs love the smell of cinnamon and may decide to take bite of em! WOOF! If ya have kids of the 2 legged variety too, this is a great project to get em in on too. Or, ya can let em create their own shapes and decorate as they want to.
*Note: Not meant for them to eat, even though it probably wouldn’t hurt them 🙂
How to Make Homemade Gingerbread Dog Ornaments:
Supplies Needed:
½ cup baking soda
¼ cup cornstarch
⅓ cup water
2 Tbsp. cinnamon
2 tsp. ginger
ribbon
paint pen
straw
optional- brown food coloring
Directions:
Preheat oven to 175°
Whisk together baking soda, cornstarch, cinnamon, and ginger together well.
Combine dry ingredients in a large saucepan with water, bring to a boil, stirring constantly until mixture is smooth and pudding like in consistency.
Remove from heat and stir in brown coloring if desired. The spices will add a bit of color but it is still pretty light, I wanted mine to not only smell like gingerbread but resemble it in color as well so I added a good amount of coloring.
Pour dough out onto waxed or parchment paper, wrap lightly to keep moist and allow to cool just until it is comfortable to touch’
Knead dough, adding cornstarch until it feels like a silky playdough.
Roll dough to ¼” thickness.
Cut out shapes using a dog bone cookie cutter (or a dog house, fire hydrant,etc..)
Use a straw to poke holes for ribbon, on the ends if you want to hang vertically or 2 in the center for a bow.
Place cookies on cookie sheet and bake for 30 minutes, flip, and bake and additional 20 minutes.
Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
Add string or ribbon to hang your ornament on.
Write your pets name, and the year if you want, using a paint pen-dry before hanging.
Hang and enjoy!
**Note how you can do the holes different depending on which way you want them to hang.
