How to Prepare for a New Kitten

Welcoming a gorgeous kitten to the family is such an exciting thing to do, with the cute little bundle of joy brightening up your home but are you ready for the new addition to arrive?

There are lots of things that you need to do in preparation for your kitten, from changes in the home to stocking up on essentials.

Kittens require a lot of attention and key products to ensure they have a happy and healthy start in life and the following post covers everything you need to prepare for your kitten properly.

How to Prepare for a New Kitten

Initial Healthcare

One of the first things you must do when taking in a new kitten is to ensure that they have had the necessary vaccinations to keep them healthy.

Kittens are ideally given vaccinations at 6, 9, 12 and 15 weeks old to ensure they’re strong enough to go out into the world without being at risk of picking up any infections or diseases.

You should also take a look for the correct flea and tick treatments that you can pick up from pet retailers like Petwell, to ensure you have your kitten covered from fleas and their eggs.

Cat-Proofing the Home

From the moment your kitten arrives in your home they are going to want to explore their new environment.

This makes it really important to cat-proof your home before you introduce your kitten, to ensure they’re safe and secure.

Start by removing any toxic plants that could be poisonous to your kitten, covering any electrical sockets and cables to prevent any curious paws or teeth from getting hold of them, and tie together any blind cords so that your kitten won’t be tempted to play with them.

Dedicated Spaces

Kittens require dedicated zones right through to adulthood, as just like humans they like to have private spaces for the bathroom, with a separate area to eat and drink.

Choose the areas within your home that are best suited for your cat’s litter tray, food bowls, and cat bed to ensure your kitten has plenty of room to live happily.

Similarly, you want your kitten to have areas that they associate with playtime and sleeping, as this will be a space they can go to when they want to relax and wind down.

Essential Products

Whether you choose to spoil your kitten rotten with a basket full of new toys to play with, or you want to take things slowly and introduce them to a few new things at a time, there are lots of essential products to invest in before your kitten arrives.

Firstly, they need a good scratching post to keep them entertained and provide hours of fun, something they can get their little claws into without damaging your lovely sofas and table legs.

Similarly, you should get some soft toys and dangly toys to keep your kitten stimulated and energized, as playtime is always one of their favorite times!

Finally, a good cozy bed for them to snuggle up into throughout the day will ensure your cat feels happy and content each day.

Very good tips. Watch out for floor length curtains that will make a fun climb for a kitten....
