Is your furry friend lookin’ a little on the pudgy side lately? Around here we have some skinny minnies, but then there are three of us lookin’ on the fluffy side. Yea, those dreaded words “overweight”, “well fed” or “hasn’t missed a meal”.
I’ve told ya before ’bout my sister Sallie and her jiggly jello belly. Well, take a look at that jiggly chest. My Lady calls her Sweet Pea, but if ya ask me it should be more like her Butter Bean. She sure ain’t pea sized no more WOOF!
My big brother Seager looks like a walkin’ hoagie bun! WOOF! He has a wide back and it looks like it splits right down the middle. And, do ya see that gut hangin’ down? Rather portly lookin’ don’t cha think?!
But wait! I’m gonna fess up! I took a long hard look at myself the other day. Where in the heck did my girlish figure go? I got rolls on my neck and I’m lookin’ kinda R-O-U-N-D! I can’t seem to find my waist no more and those are NOT ribs you see on my side – it’s fat rolls! Just the other day it took me a couple a minutes just to squirm up off the darn floor. I was like a grounded roly-poly! The sad part is my Lady done went and called me ‘Pumpkin‘!!
You can tell I study food! I’ve done went to describin’ our fat like foods! We have jiggly jello, hoagie buns, butter beans, pumpkin… All this talk of food done went and made me hungry! I could go for a treat about now WOOF!
Apparently, it’s not just a problem at our house. There are dogs and cats everywhere havin’ a weight problem. Really though, us pets just eat what we’re given by you human folk and what we can beg out of ya WOOF! Since my Lady’s in charge of the food and treat supply ’round here, I’m gonna let her talk to ya about a solution she has found for our weight issues.
Here’s the solution My Lady wants to talk to ya about:
Miss Molly is right! Did you know that in the US 53% of dogs and 55% of cats are now overweight or obese? And, the epidemic is getting worse. Many pet parents don’t realize their pets are overweight. A lot of other pet parents know their pets are overweight and have tried to help them lose weight, only to fail. That is very frustrating. Cutting back on treats and controlling portions isn’t easy. Just like when we humans try to eat less it’s not very satisfying. Cutting portions only leaves the pet feeling hungry and begging. If you’re like me, those begging eyes and looks are hard to resist! I don’t want my pets to be hungry, which leads me to give in. It’s almost a guaranteed failure. Therefore we end up with overweight dogs and overweight cats.
How to know if your pets are overweight:
With some pets, you obviously know they are overweight by how they look. With others, it may be harder to tell. Here’s a simple test you can do to at home that will give you an idea. You may be surprised by the results!
- With hand in fist, feel knuckles – if ribs feel like this, pet is underweight.
- With hand open, feel top of knuckles – if ribs feel like this, pet is just right.
- With hand open, feel palm-side of knuckles – if ribs feel like this, pet is overweight.
I wanted to share this super cute video called ‘One Big Kitty’ with you. I’m sure a lot of us can relate! I know I sure can!
So, what can we do to help our pets lose the flab?

My dog, Holly, is a 9 year old beagle who weighs 37 pounds. She is a little overweight but my vet hasn't commented about it. She's a very happy girl. I just want her to be happy and healthy.

My dog Goose is about 5 years old now(guessing because we adopted him from the shelter). He is a pug/Boston terrier mix and we have been told to watch his weight by the vet. He currently weighs 32 pounds and should be around 25. So any help in getting him to shed these pounds would be great.
