We sure love having pets in the house. They bring so much happiness in our lives. However, there are times when caring for them becomes extra challenging. This happens when they get into accidents or develop illnesses. One of the most common diseases among pets involves the skin.
Sadly, our pet’s cuteness cannot protect them from parasites, fungi, bacteria, allergens, and other elements that cause skin diseases. This is the reason why as their humans, we must educate ourselves about animal dermatology, particularly with the common skin diseases for pets caused by pets. Check out the list below.
#1 Sarcoptic Mange
This skin disease is commonly referred to as scabies. It is caused by a tiny mite that lives in the deep layers of the skin which irritates the skin. Your pet will feel very uneasy when they catch this disease as they will feel the urge to scratch hard due to severe itchiness. Keep in mind that this scabies does not only affect animals but it can also be easily transmitted to humans.
Among the common symptoms of scabies are red rashes and bumps that might be mistaken for mosquito bites. If you suspect that your pet is infected, try to look for bald spots in their hair and fur. You might also see scabbing and sores. Bring them to a veterinarian as soon as possible so they can recommend an appropriate course of treatment and prevent the mites from spreading within your home.
#2 Ringworm
Contrary to what the name suggests, this disease is not caused by a worm but rather a fungus. This is also known as Dermatophytosis. The affected animal would have circular patches in its skin, commonly on the head, ears, forelegs, and paws. You will see lesions surrounded by inflammation. The affected area becomes highly noticeable because of the absence of hair.
Ringworm is very common among cats and dogs. The fungus that causes these diseases is found in soil which makes them very susceptible. Take note that aside from animals, humans can also contract this skin problem.
#3 Ticks
This is the nightmare of pet owners, especially those who have more than one pet in the house. The moment one of them is infected with ticks, chances are, all of them have it too.
You can use tweezers to pull out ticks from your pet’s fur or skin. This is one of the most effective ways to prevent spreading and to eventually eliminate this parasite. However, you should carefully place the pulled out ticks in a sealed jar where they won’t be able to get out. Pour alcohol inside the jar and wait for a few days for it to completely die before disposal.
If you live in an area where ticks are common, it is strongly recommended that you ask your veterinarian about preventive measures to avoid having this problem. Remember that ticks can cause serious conditions such as Lyme disease. Do not expose your pets, yourself, and your family to such risks and act fast before ticks take over your household.
