FAQ
Yes, canned salmon is generally safe for cats to eat in moderation. However, it is important to ensure that the canned salmon does not contain any added ingredients such as salt or seasoning that may be harmful to cats.
Stored in an air-tight container in the refrigerator, the treats will keep for up to a week.
The best way is to bake what you can safely use in one week. Then, freeze the cat treat dough and take it out and bake it as needed for more delicious treats.

Our kitties play a special part in our lives and it is great to be able to "treat" them now and again.

Homemade Salmon Cat Treats
Ingredients:
6-7 ounces of canned salmon, with the juice
½ cup cornmeal
¼ cup non-fat dry milk
1 egg
1 tablespoon cooking oil
2 tablespoons water
1 cup flour (whole wheat flour or all-purpose)
How to make these tasty kitty cat treats for your feline friend:
Heat oven to 350 F.
Combine all ingredients except the flour and mix well.
Slowly add the flour, stirring well until the dough forms. It is very heavy dough, so you may need to put on gloves and mix it by hand.
Place the dough on a floured surface and knead it a few times.
Flatten the dough and turn it over to coat with flour.
Roll out a little less than ¼-inch thick.
Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into small, kitty-bite-size pieces.
Cutting the dough crisscross works well and gives you small squares.
You can also roll each of those squares into a ball and press them with your finger to make flat, round treats. (Children love to do this.)
Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 10-15 minutes.
Watch carefully as they can burn quickly.
If you don't want to bake them all at once, the dough may be wrapped well and frozen.
Store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator.
Makes approximately 500 treats.

I have two cats, one is super picky and the other will eat pretty much anything. I'd love to see how these would go over with them!

Miss Molly. Thanks for your ideas! I need to know the baje time. Plus the trick of adding catnip is clever. I'm baking a combo of liver, brown rice cooked in beef broth, a carrot, and I just started an herb garden so I chopped some up to add. I'll let you know if TomiRow likes it. Monique

I've never thought about making treats for my kitties before. This would sure be better for them than commercial treats and be easier on my wallet too.

Oh, thank you thank you thank you! I'll be printing out this recipe ASAP.
I stopped buying fish-y wet food several months ago. (I buy Friskies, except on rare "special occasions." Unfortunately I'm under tremendous financial stress right now, but if things were different I'd buy only the best of the best for my cats.)
Anyway, I stopped buying salmon, tuna, etc. after reading a few articles about how these kinds of wet food can be laced with contaminants such as heavy metals. I didn't want to take any kind of risk with that!
Again, thank you SO much for this recipe. I can't wait to make it!
ConfusedCody says
I’m very confused, the recipe calls for canned Tuna, which would have the contaminateds you speak of- but you’re going to make the recipe anyway?
