How to Successfully Alleviate Bloating in Your Pet Poodle

One of the best dog breeds to have is a poodle. They are very smart and very sweet, a combination that makes for a rewarding pet. It is important to know, as with any kind of dog, that there are some health things to keep in mind when you own a poodle. One of the health concerns that poodles suffer from the most is bloating. So how can you alleviate bloating in your poodle? We have some suggestions.

Smaller Meals

If your poodle is prone to bloat, the most important thing you can do is feed them a series of smaller meals throughout the day instead of one or two big ones. Big meals can create gas and make the stomach twist, which can become very painful and can risk your dog’s health.

Food Level

Another simple thing you can do is to place the food and water bowls at ground level. Dogs who eat with their head down have less of a chance of swallowing air along with food, which can lead to bloat. Take the time to do this, and your pet will be healthier and happier overall.

Vet Visit

Because bloating is such a dangerous health concern, it needs to be taken seriously. As soon as you see your dog exhibiting signs of bloating, you need to contact your vet as soon as possible. Surgery is needed in most cases of bloating, since the stomach is twisted and needs to be righted. Your dog will be given fluids and a tube will be inserted into its stomach to alleviate the gases and to decompress it so that it can be operated on.

Watch Your Pet

It is important to note that if your dog has had bloating issues once, there is a good chance it can happen again. Professionals, like those at South Seattle Emergency Veterinary Hospital, know that there is a procedure that your vet can provide that can prevent it, though, and it is called right side gastropexy. It is definitely an option to consider if you do not want to run the risk of facing this issue again with your poodle.

There are no real home remedies to help with bloat in poodles. The best thing you can do is to prevent it by feeding your dog smaller meals and making sure that the bowls are on the floor to keep them from swallowing air when they eat. If your dog does develop symptoms of bloat, you need to quickly take them to the vet so that they be examined and helped.

I didn't know this about poodles (except the smart part). I've never had a poodle.

There are several neighbors that have poodles and I never knew what smart and sweet dogs they were. I also was not aware that they could have this problem of bloating. It is good that there are some things owners can do to help prevent the problem.
