If you have a new puppy, you want to train it so it can follow instructions when they grow up. Having a well-trained dog will surely provide convenience on your part, allowing you to enjoy their company even more.
Here are the most important things to bear in mind when training your puppy:
Set Aside Time Just for Training
Since you want to be consistent in your approach to training, it helps if you block out time in your schedule just for training your new puppy. Consistency will help condition your puppy when you order it to do certain things. If you stick to your schedule, most likely, the two of you will understand each other better.
For example, your puppy might need training in controlling its bladder. One way of doing this is to bring it outside to pee. It helps if you bring it out every morning at 6 am just so it can pee in the backyard. By doing this consistently, your puppy will realize that the backyard is the place for peeing.
Take note that the puppy will probably not make the connection during the first few days or even the first few weeks. Thus, it’s important to be patient at first. Eventually, you’ll no longer bring in the mop to clean after them.
Not All Puppies Are The Same
Some puppies are easier to train than others. This means one puppy may be house-trained within a month while others could take up to three months.
Still, do not punish a pup just because it is taking them a long time to learn. It is better to be patient and to keep training the pup despite its inability to understand certain commands. Eventually, within their own time, the pup may learn what you are trying to teach it.
If not, you may try the services of dog training specialists, like H&H Dog Training.
Try To Break Old Habits
Some puppies may have learned some practices at a previous home or owner that you don’t like. For instance, your pup may have learned to shred tissue paper in the bathroom when it is left alone for a while. This is understandably undesirable behavior so you may have to break that habit somehow.
One way is to fill a clean sprayer bottle with water. Spritz the water in your puppy’s face when you catch it trying to reach for the tissue roll with its mouth. This is a safe way of showing your puppy that you don’t like that behavior.
If you are consistent with this negative reinforcement, the pup may soon refrain from going after the tissue.
Create New Habits To Reinforce Training
To reinforce training, you should also reward the pup – positive reinforcement. Keep a container of treats on the kitchen table or wherever you prefer to train your pup. If it does something you like, give them a treat as a reward.
For example, your pup might position beside the kitchen door after eating their meal so that you can let it go pee outside. That should be encouraged, thus give your puppy a treat when they’re done peeing in the backyard. Be sure to give verbal praise and pat them gently on their head as well.
Allow Your Pup to Have a Good Time
To your new pup, everything about you is a wonderful new thing to explore. So, don’t be surprised if your pup wants to go anywhere and everywhere around the house, sniffing around objects and furniture. Be sure the pup knows which rooms are allowed to enter and which ones are off-limits. If your pup starts pawing and scratching doors, be ready with your water sprayer to dissuade it.
If your pup seems to be having a great time going around the house, this could be a good time to insert some training as well. For instance, you could try training them to recognize their new name.
Puppies are a lot of fun to have around, but you also have to take responsibility for them. That’s why it is important to start training them as early as they enter your home.
Don’t hesitate to thwart bad behavior since there’s always a possibility that it’ll turn into a bad habit. Just remember not to be too harsh on the punishment, if you opt to give one; a simple water spray would suffice.
Also, remember to reward your pup as well when they do something you like. Eventually, your pup will learn what they need to know so that the two of you will have a great relationship that will benefit both of you.
