What Type of Fence Is Best for Outdoor Dogs?

Owning a dog can be one of life’s greatest joys. On the other hand, being a good dog owner also means paying much more attention to seemingly small details.

For instance, if you’re considering replacing your old fence or installing a dog run, you’ll want to give much more thought to the type of fencing you choose than you might otherwise.

With this in mind, here is a brief overview of the most common types of fencing and why each one is and isn’t always a good choice for people with outdoor dogs.

What Type of Fence Is Best for Outdoor Dogs?

Wood Fencing Pros and Cons

Many homeowners choose wood fencing because it offers a handsome, classic look, but it isn’t necessarily always the greatest choice for dog owners.

Wood fencing does provide more privacy than chain link fencing.

This can be a huge benefit if your dog tends to bark at the neighbors or people on the street as a wood fence can be built to block your dogs view.

However, wood is also much more susceptible to rot and more easily damaged.

If your dog likes to chew, they could potentially chew through the boards and escape while you’re away.

Your dog relieving themselves on the fence could also cause the wood to degrade much more quickly and result in you having to replace the fence every few years.

Chain Link Fencing Pros and Cons

Chain link is usually the preferred choice for dog runs and pens, but it can also be great for fencing in your entire yard.

Two of the biggest benefits of chain link fencing is that it is much more affordable than other types of fencing and also much more durable and longer-lasting.

Of course, a chain-link will allow your dog to see out and potentially bark at anyone who passes by.

Nonetheless, this can easily be overcome by using plastic slats that are specially designed to obstruct the view through the chain link.

Vinyl Fencing Pros and Cons

Vinyl fencing is stronger and more durable than wood, while also offering the same level of privacy.

Vinyl is also much easier to clean, which means you can simply wash off any muddy paw prints with the hose.

These reasons make vinyl a good choice for dog owners.

However, vinyl also tends to cost much more than other types of fencing, which means it is probably not the best choice if the price is one of your primary concerns.

As you can see, all types of fencing have their own advantages and drawbacks for dog owners.

This makes it important that you carefully consider your specific needs and also how much you’re willing to spend.

By doing so, you can be assured that you’re happy with and also one that helps keep your dog secured.
